Vascular System & arterial system Flashcards
What system refers to the blood vessels that carry the blood around the body?
Vascular system
There are 3 major types of blood vessels, what are they?
arteries, capillaries and veins
What blood vessel carries oxygenerated blood away from the heart?
arteries
What blood vessels are tiny pathways & site of gas exchange.
capillaries
What blood vessels carry deoxygenated blood back to the heart?
veins
Oxygenerated blood enters body organs & tissues & deoxygenerated blood leaves the organs & tissues thru the ?
capillaries
The walls of all blood vessels, except capillaries have 3 layers or tunics that surround the lumen, what is the outside layer called?
tunica externa the outer tunic comprised of connective tissue.
The walls of all blood vessels, except capillaries have 3 layers or tunics that surround the lumen, what is the middle layer called?
tunica media - comprised of smooth muscle cells & sheets of elastin.
The walls of all blood vessels, except capillaries have 3 layers or tunics that surround the lumen, what is the inner tunic called?
tunica intima - comprised of endothelium which is flat squamous epithelial cells.
Blood vessels - what is the outer tunic (tunica externa) comprised of?
connective tissue - this layer strengthens & supports the blood vessel.
Blood vessels - what is the middle tunic (tunica media) comprised of?
smooth muscle cells & sheets of elastin.
Middle tunic (tunica media) - reduction in the lumens diameter as smooth muscle contracts - what is this called?
vasoconstriction
Middle tunic (tunica media) - increase in the lumens diameter as the smooth muscle relaxes - what is this called?
vasodilation
Blood vessels - what is the inner tunic (tunica intima) comprised of?
endothelium which is flat squamous epithelial cells. this provides a smooth surface for blood flow thru the lumen of the vessel.
What does bifurcates mean?
branches into two e.g. common iliac artery bifurcates into the internal & external iliac arteries
