vascular shunt Flashcards
1
Q
what is vascular shunt
A
the increased blood flow to the skeletal muscles to meet the oxygen demand during exercise
2
Q
how does vascular shunt work
A
the chemoreceptors/baroreceptors/proprioreceptors detect a change in acidity and CO2/changes in blood pressure/changes in muscle length. they send a message to the vasomotor centre.
the vasomotor centre stimulates the sympathetic nerves located in the walls of the blood vessels.
these cause arterioles and pre-capillary sphincters to vasoconstrict and vasodilate, decreasing blood flow to non-essential areas and increasing blood flow to the working muscles
