The parents of a newborn are concerned about a large red mark that was present at birth and has not disappeared. Upon examination the tumor is determined to be benign. What is the tumor?
A benign hemangioma (made up of blood vessels)
A patient presents with multiple masses on the skin, breasts, & liver. Biopsy shows the tumors are made of endothelial cells & highly aggressive/malignant, what is the diagnosis?
Angiosarcomas
Patient works in a PVC & metal (arsenic) distribution center, they present to the clinic with multiple masses on the skin & breasts, What is the tumor & what’s it made up of?
Angiosarcoma which is made up of endothelial cells this cancer is very AGGRESSIVE
A older male patient of European descent with a history of HHV-8, presents with purple patches/plaques, & nodules on the skin. What’s the likely diagnosis?
Kaposi Sarcoma, made up of endothelial cells
Older Eastern European males
AIDS patients
Transplant recipients
Are all at higher risk of developing which type of tumors?
Kaposi sarcoma
A benign but very painful tumor typically found under the nail bed (subungual) or on the dorsal surface of the hand
Glomus tumor
What cells are glomus tumors made out of
smooth muscle cells that are originally involved in temperature regulation & AV shunting
Nests of round regular smooth muscle cells with connective tissue, they’re associated with branching vascular spaces
Glomus tumor
Sheets of spindle endothelial cells that create slit-like capsular channels, it’s associated with an infection
Kaposi’s sarcoma associated with HHV-8 usually seen in immunodeficient patients (AIDs, Diabetes, Transplant patients)
Purple/brown/red lesions that don’t blanch & eventually ulcerate, ass with HHV-8
Kaposi sarcoma
A fatal sarcoma of the liver
Angiosarcoma, very malignant usually in people exposed to PVC, arsenic, or thorotrast
Cells are CD31 +ve
