Vascular diseases Flashcards
Classification of vascular diseases
Arteriosclerosis
Atherosclerosis
Immunological vascular diseases
Unknown causes
Examples of unknown causes of vascular diseases
- Scleroderma
- Cranial (Giant Cell) Arteritis
- Takayasu’s Disease
- Buerger’s disease
Effects of arteriosclerosis on the blood vessel
- Fibrous thickening of the intima
- Fibrosis & scarring of media w/ accumulation of mucopolysaccharide
- Fragmentation of elastic laminae
The venous diseases of the lower limb
- Varicose veins
- Deep vein thrombosis
- Post-phlebic Syndrome
Types of aneurysm
1.Atherosclerotic Abdominal Aortic
2.Aortic dissection (Cystic medial
necrosis)
3.Syphilitic
4.Mycotic (infective)
5.Berry
6.Micro-aneurysms
Clinical features of Acute Peripheral Vascular Disease
hint: 5Ps
Pain Pallor Paralysis Pulseless Parenthesis
Signs of death of Acute Peripheral Vascular Disease
flexor rigidity
motor loss
sensory loss
fixed skin staining
Etiology: Acute Peripheral Vascular Disease
- Thrombi
- Emboli
- Trauma
- Iatrogenic
Chronic Peripheral Vascular Disease: Critical Ischaemia clinical signs and symptoms
- Rest Pain : bruning / worse at night / better when working
- Impotence : aorto-iliac disease / bilateral iliac disease / Le Riche Sx
- Ulceration
- Gangrene
Describe what Intermittent Claudification is
Ischaemic muscle pain due to occlusion of a specific muscle group -> occurs
during exercise -> improves with rest -> Incapacitation leads to Rx
Deep Vein Thrombus clinical presentation
- Swelling / pain / warmth / sensitivity
- Phlegmasia cerulea dolens: blue edema
- Plegmasia alba dolens : white leg
Systemic diseases of connective tissue disorders
- Reiters Syndrome
- Psoriatic Arthritis
- Ankylosing Spondylitis
- Inflammatory Bowel Disease
- Bechet’s Syndrome
Clinical presentation of varicose veins
pain swelling heavy feeling cramos itching cosmesis (long term : stasis / dermatitis / ulceration / bleeding)
Intermittent Claudification signs
Absent pulse bruit pallor rubor cold atrophy / skin changes / ulceration / gangrene
