Vascular Flashcards
Circulatory systems generally have three main features:
Fluid (blood or hemolymph) that transports materials
System of blood vessels
A heart to pump the fluid through the vessels
- It is located within thoracic cavity together with the lungs.
HEART
Four Chambers of heart
Right Atrium
Right Ventricle
Left Atrium
Left Ventricle
Receives blood into heart from body, from veins
Right Atrium
Pumps blood out to the lungs
Right Ventricle
Receives blood into heart from lungs
Left Atrium
Pumps blood out into body via arteries
Left Ventricle
2 part system
Circulation to lungs
Circulation to body
Blood is made up of four major components.
Plasma: the liquid portion.
Red blood cells.
White cells.
Platelets
Comprises 50 to 60 percent of the total volume of blood
Plasma is a straw-colored liquid = 90% H2O and 10% solids
Plasma
RBCs lose their nucleus at maturity.
Make up about 99% of the blood’s cellular component.
Red color is due to hemoglobin.
Red blood cells
complex protein made up of four protein strands, plus iron-rich heme groups.
Hemoglobin (Hb)
RBC lifespan
4 months
defend against disease by recognizing proteins that do not belong to the body.
White cells
are cell fragments used in blood clotting.
are derived from megakaryocites
Platelets
Is a fiberous protein in the blood that reacts with thrombin produced from the injured tissue to make a thread-like mass called Fibrin.
Fibrinogen
blood clotting and healing
Coagulation
blood clotting and healing
Coagulation
Classes of blood vessels
Arteries and arterioles
Veins
Capillaries
carry blood away from the heart.
Arteries and arterioles
branch off of arteries
can constrict to direct and control blood flow. They may, for example, increase or decrease blood supply to the skin.
Arterioles
walls are only one cell thick, allowing exchange of gases, nutrients, and wastes.
Capillaries
blood returns back to heart
thinner-walled
Veins
are thin-walled collectors of blood.
Venules
An accessory to the Circulatory system
Responsible for filtering foreign substances from the lymph.
Lymph System
Scattered among the vessels
Produce Lymphocytes and Antibodies
Each lymph gland has its own blood supply and venous drainage.
Lymph Node and Glands
