Q

How is the ready use tank level maintained

A

Fuel fills up the tank pushing up the float valve when it get the the designated level, causing the flap valve to open. When the fuel decreases the flap favs goes back down

21
Q

Fully explain how the module ventilation systems works

A

The depression of air is formed by the rushing exhaust gasses due to Bernoulli’s Therom

Air is drawn into the module because of the depression formed at the other end

Air circulates around module keeping it cool

Vent flaps must always be open

Q

What is reason for mag chips, where are they fitted, how often are they checked

A

Mag chips are fitted into a scavenge oil system
Collect bits of ferrous metal that have broken away from the engine . Give an early indication of wear/ malfunction

Inspected every 24 hours of the running has turbine

25
What oil is used in Spey gas turbine
OX22
26
State 6 safety devices fitted to a has turbine
``` Hand trip Fire detectors Power turbine entry temperature Partial overspend safety device Vibration monitor Power turbine over speed ```
27
Explain partial over speed trip
If the engine over speeds the propeller comes out the water, this device reduces the quantity of fuel supplied to reduce the engines speed
28
Hazards associated with gas turbines
Igniters | Noise
29
Precautions must be adhered to when with working with igniters
Produce sparks voltage excess 2000 v, After use igniters and associated circuitry must not be touched for at least 5 minutes to allow stored electrical energy to discharge
30
What fire system is fitted to gas turbine module
Fire detector
31
What checks are performed every hour on a running gas turbine
Pressures+temperatures Oil levels Noise+vibration Leaks
32
Explain wet motoring
Wet motoring is carried out after maintenance has been undertaken on the engine fuel system, to confirm its operation and to vent off any air from the system.
33
Explain dry motoring
To purge the combustion chamber of any unburnt fuel and explosive gasses To turn over compressors to enable washing and inhibiting routines to be carried out
34
How do we inhibit them components of gas tubing against corrosion when not in use
Spray PX24 into the engine to disperse the moisture and to coat and protect the internal parts of the engine
35
What are the main functions of a gearbox
Transmit power from prime mover to shaft Allow for variation in speed and power Allow for changed between ahead and astern thrust
36
What are the main components of a gear box
Pnions Wheels Quill shaft Casings
37
How do you change speed of a gear train
Add a differnt size gear
38
State 4 type of gear profile
Straight spur gear Helical gear Double helical gear Worm gear
39
Explain the construction and advantages of double helical gear
The double helical gear are opposing angled teeth form a V The advantage of this is that it produces thrust in both direction cancelling out the thrust
40
Explain the construction and advantage of a worm gear
Work gear resembling a screw with continuous tooth forming parallel helical teeth  Advantage that can join shafts together that are 90 degrees at each other
41
State the three methods of gear reduction
Single gear reduction Double gear reduction Double gear reduction duel tandem
42
Explain the purpose of the quill shaft
Quill shaft acts as a torsional spring, twisting along its length .by having the ability to move load can be evenly distributed and any misalignment can be compensated for
43
What checks are carried out when applying break pads
Ensure no risk exists All break pads are applied The shaft is stationary
44
Break checks on removal of break
All pads are clear No fire danger exists The shaft is turning
45
Purpose of the thrust block
The purpose of the thrust block is to absorb forces from the action of the propellor and transmit it to the ships hull
46
Purpose of the turning gear
Slowly rotate the shaft and propellor for docking
47
Purpose of the Plummer block
The ship Plummer block are use to support the weigh of the shaft without absorbing any thrust
48
Purpose bulkhead gland seal
Bulkhead gland seal purpose it to maintain water tight integrity as the shaft passes through compartments
49
Purpose of the stern seal
The stern seal is to maintain water tight integrity as the shaft passes through the ships hull
50
Purpose of A bracket
The purpose of the A brackets are to support the weight of the propellor shaft
51
What principle does a plummer block use for lubrication
Michaels principle
52
What substance does a bulkhead gland seal use
Grease
53
What is fitted to a stern seal in the event of an emergency
Emergency inflation seal
54
What do A brackets use for lubricantion
Sea water
55
What are the three sections of the shaft line
Thrust shaft, intermediate shaft, tail shaft
56
How are the thrust shaft and intermediate shafts connected
Flanges with a ring of nuts and bolts
57
How are intermediate and tail section connected
SKF coupling The intermediate shaft and tail shaft are connected by SKF coupling which is a hydraulic coupling and is designed so that the tail shaft can be split from the intermediate shaft without leaving the flange
58
What are the two type of propellor
Fixed propellor Control pitch propellor
59
How is the gearbox kept at the correct temperature
Serkstat
60
Purpose of the FL cut in
Check cut in pressure of the motor driven pump should the gear driven pump fail
