Various forms of insulation materials Flashcards

1
Q

Rigid insulation boards - PIR insulation

A

Polysiocyanrate (PIR) is a thermoset plastic produced as a foam.

PIR is baked under pressure in a factory and left to cool. Then cut to size and packaged up.

PIR insulation is the more thermally efficent insulation material commonly used.

it’s used in internal walls, solid floors and suspended timber floors.

What does Polystrene insulation include

A

EPS insulation - (expanded polystrene) in long sheets 1200mm x 2400mm and various thickness 25, 50,70,150 and 200mm.its a popular choice for internal wall insulation.

XPS insulation - (extruded polystyrene) is rigid foam insulation.much denser than other type of insulation, which gives it a greater compressive strength.

resists both moisture and water vapour penetration.

XPS is used on eternal and internal wall insulation.

Q

what is phenolic insulation

A

rigid insulation with a closed cell structure.
wet foam mix is added directly at the botom layer of the facing material.it then expands to meet the top layer to form a sandwhich then baked under pressure and cured in a second oven.

most thermally efficent insulation commonly used in retrofit.can be used in a variety of roof, wall and floor application.

Q

why are Polyurethane (PUR) used in domestic retrofit?

A

-they are cheaper and readily available

-have good U and R values

-Are not vapour permeable

Q
A

A thermal bridge is part of the construction where insulation is:
-Discontinuous
-Thinner than elsewhere in the envelope

this can cause heat loss through the building structure and risk of surface condensation and mould growth.

Q

what is Polyurethane foam used for

A

used to insulate cavity walls with narrow or partially-filled cavities. The process involves injecting foam through holes drilled in the external skin of brickwork.

Injected PU foam is a two-component, chemically-modified polyurethane foam that achieves good U-value and air-permeability results (i.e., air can easily pass through it).

The installation must be carried out in accordance with BBA Certification (so that it meets industry standards).

Q

what is Aerogel

A

Aerogel is a silica-based product that is available in a fiber-reinforced silica aerogel blanket. It’s suitable for thermal upgrades of solid walls, floors, roofs and associated thermal bridges.

it can be fixed to other materials such as concrete, brick, wood, and metal and it is ideal for use in energy-efficiency domestic retrofit installations.

It’s a thermal technology offering the thinnest insulation available to prevent thermal and cold bridging.

it has the highest insulation value of any known material and the lowest thermal conductivity value.

what is a VIP

A

A vacuum insulation panel, an insulation product used for construction and retrofit to meet very high thermal requirements.

they are used for floors and panel insulation for internal and external walls.

11
Q

what is thermal bypass?

A

This is where there are gaps between pieces of insulation material that may allow air to pass between and behind the insulation, taking the heat away.

Q

What is Wind washing?

A

This is where insulation is not within an airtight construction, so that wind may pass through the insulation material and carry the heat away.
