- what are some regional names for it?

A

Names - Sangiovese in Chianti, Brunello in Montalcino, Prugnolo Gentile in Montepulciano (and makes Vino Nobile de Montepulciano). However, there’s a separate varietal named Montepulciano that goes in Montepulciano d’Abruzzo that is different.

Chianti Classico (>80% Sangiovese)
Brunello di Montalcino (100% Sangiovese, at least four years age)
Rosso di Montalcino (also 100% but less age)
Vino nobile di Montepulciano
Super Tuscans (sometimes, but this is an unregulated category)
Also California and Washington State examples (Red Willow)
Rose Sangiovese - acidic and bright
