Variation & Inheritance Flashcards
Variation
The differences within a species
Discrete Variation
The measurements fall into distinct groups
Continuous Variation
There is a range of values between a maximum and a minimum
Single Gene Inheritance
Inheritance that results in discrete variation
Polygenic Inheritance
Inheritance that results in continuous variaton
Gene
A short strand of DNA that codes for a protein
Allele
Different versions of the same gene
Phenotype
The physical description Eg. “blue eyes”
Phenotype
The allele description EG. “BB”
Dominant
An allele that will determine the phenotype
Recessive
An allele that can be dominated by another
Homozygous
Both alleles are the same EG. BB or bb
Heterozygous
Both alleles are different EG. Bb
P1
The parent generation
F1
The first generation of offspring
