Variation 4.3.6 Flashcards
What is a phenotype?
The characteristics of an organism, such as its size, are known as its phenotype.
What 2 things are the difference in phenotype caused by?
- Genetic make up - its genotype
- The environment in which an individual develops
What is intraspecific variation?
The differences between individuals of the same species
What is interspecific variation?
Differences between different species
What is continuous variation?
Characteristics that are affected by both genotype and environment
What are examples of continuous variation?
Height and weight
Is continuous variation qualitative or quantitative?
Quantitative - any feature that can be measured e.g. height, length of leaves etc.
How can continuous variation be graphed?
Line graphs or histograms
What is discontinuous variation?
The variation between individuals results from the genes that an organism inherits, and the environment has little to no effect
Give an example of discontinuous variation
Discrete groups with no overlap! E.g. blood groups, eye colour, shape of bacteria
Is discontinuous variation qualitative or quantitative?
Qualitative as there are distinct categories
How can discontinuous variation be recorded?
Bar graph
