Variation Flashcards
what is variation
Variation arises from a combination of genetic and environmental causes. Most populations contain individuals that vary from one another. Some slight variations help organisms to adapt better to their environment
Why is Variation important
- It enables specifies to adapt better to changing environmental conditions, improving chances of survival
- It makes it less likely that any adverse changes to the environment will wipe out an entire species since some organisms may be able to adapt to the new conditions
What causes Variation to occur?
Environmental variation
egs of environmental factors in animals
- food, drugs, light, temperature
egs of environmental factors in plants
- Temp,light intensity, water
Genetic Variation
Mutation- the only source of brand new characteristics in the gene pool, so they are really the final source of all genetic variation
Random Fertilization- Any two gametes of opposite types can fuse together at fertilization so there are many different possible combinations of genes which may be produced
What the two types of Variation
Discontinuous Variation
Continuous Variation
Explain the two types of Variation
Continuous - characteristics show a continuous gradation from one extreme to the other without a break
Discontinuous - characteristics show clear cut differences with no intermediates. Individuals can be divided into distinct categories.
