variables Flashcards
planning and conducting research
independent variables
what the experimenter CONTROLS
dependent variables
what the experimenter MEASURES
why should you control of extraneous variables
it is important to control extraneous variables so the cause and effect can be established properly, which allows validity. it also allows reliability since it will be easier to replicate
participant variables examples
age, intelligence, motivation, skill, gender, experience
situational variables examples
order effects- e.g boredom
environmental variables examples
time of day, temperature, noise
demand characteristics
cues which communicate to the participant what is expected of them, which is therefore replicated by the participant. they try and mirror behaviour they believe they are expected to achieve
operationalising variables
defining variables in a measurable way
