Variables Flashcards
What are variables?
- anything that may assume numerical or categorical values
- central concept in research
- any factor or property that a researcher measures, controls, or manipulates
What are the 2 types of variable?
- Discrete
- Continuous
Type: countable, certain number of values
Discrete
Type: measured, infinite number of possible values
Continuous
3 kinds of variable
- Independent variable
- Dependent variable
- Controlled variable
Kind: manipulated, intentionally changed
Independent variable
Kind: responding variable, change as a result of the independent variable, measure or observe
Dependent variable
Kind: kept the same/unchanged, positive and negative controlled
Controlled variable
Assigning numbers to represent the values or properties of a variable
Scales of Measurement
What are the 4 concepts of scales of measurement
- Identity
- Magnitude (ordinal)
- Interval
- A true zero
Concept:
- number has particular meaning
- categories are discrete
Identity
Concept:
- inherent order from large to small, and vice versa
Magnitude (order)
Concept:
- difference between two numbers
Interval
Concept:
- absence of property
- no value
A true zero
What are the 4 types of scales of measurement?
- Nominal Variables
- Ordinal Variables
- Interval Variables
- Ratio Variables
