Variables Flashcards
How are variables characterised?
They are based on two things:
1. The nature of the variable
2. The role of the variable
How are the roles of the variable characterised?
- Independent Variable
- Dependent Variable
How is the nature of the variable characterised?
- Qualitative
- Quantitative
How is qualitative characterised?
- Nominal
- Ordinal
How is Quantitative characterised?
State the reason for the separation of quantitative and qualitative variables.
Different uses or methods
Qualitative Variables
Names
Nominal (Categorical)
no order
Nominal example
gender, hair colour
Ordinal
Clear order, order matters not the difference between values
Ordinal example
Pain score(1,2,3,4..8)
Quantitative variable
Numeric
Interval
Does not have a true zero (Numerical values without a true zero point).
0 does not indicate a complete lack of the quantity being measured.
Interval example
temperature (0 degrees)
Ratio
same as an interval but HAS AN ABSOLUTE ZERO
Ratio example
Height, weight
Discrete
variable that is counted (only whole numbers)
Discrete example
Number of rooms, dice numbers
Continuous
can take any number between the minimum and maximum value.
Continuous example
Age, decimals,
Independent variable
-factor that can be changed or manipulated
-does not depend on the other variable
Names for independent
-x axis
-before
-CAUSE
-input
-What to do
Dependent variable
-factor that will change as a result of the independent variable
-value depends on the independent variable
Names for dependent
-effect
-RESPONSE
-outcome
-output
-after
-y axis
-what happens
Controlled variable
Factors that are unchanged in the experiement
