Q

how does latitude affect temperature

A

Temperature is lower at higher latitudes, as the sun rays strike at a lower angle and the solar energy is spread out over a wider area

Q

why does altitude affect temperature

A

because the atmosphere is mainly heated by the earth’s surface. As the warm surface then emits heat in longwave radiation, the higher up one goes, the further away from the earth surface which is heated by the sun, the cooler it is. Also due to the fact that the higher up one is, the less air molecules there are, hence the particles can carry less heat

Q

why does cloud cover affect temperature

A

helps to deflect SHORTWAVE radiation during the day and retains heat by absorbing heat from longwave radiation.

Q

What is the golden rule for air pressure and winds?

A

air moves from a region of higher pressure to a region of lower pressure, the higher the difference in pressure the higher the wind’s velocity
