Valve Flashcards
Gate valves
A positive shutoff valve that uses a gate or guilotine when moved between two seats it causes a tight shut off (don’t throttle)
Throttling
Partially opening or closing s valve to restrict or regulate fluid flow rate
Globe valve
Type of valve that uses a disc and seat to regulate the flow of fluid through valve body in one direction (can throttle)
Check valve
Type of valve that allows flow in only one direction and used to prevent back flow in pipe
Needle valve
Used for very precise control of small flows using long and tapered plug
Ball check valve
A valve used to limit the flow of fluids to one direction moved back into seat once flow stops
Ball valve
Uses a hollowed out ball used in low pressure drop applications (quarter turn)
Plug valve
Shaped like a hollow out plug used to control flow. Plug valves are quick opening, quarter turn valves (designed for on/off service)
Diaphragm valves
Flexible, chemical resistant, rubber type diaphragm to control flow
Handwheel
Used to raise and lower valve stem to control the flow of fluid
Valve body
Lower portion of the valve that contains the fluids flowing through the valve
Packing
Substance such as Teflon or graphite coated material that is used inside the stuffing box to prevent leakage
Valve stem
Attaches to the flow control element in a valve
Bonnet
Bell shaped dome mounted on the body of a valve where the valve disc is held when the valve is opened
Rising stem valve
A valve in which the stem rises out of the valve handwheel when the valve is opened
