Validity And Reliability Flashcards
reliability
How consistent something is
Internal reliability
How consistent a study is each time a trial, questionnaire or test is done
External reliability
If different measures of the same thing are compared they should show similar results
Inter-rater reliability
How consistent two or more observers are when conducting a study
Split half method
A way of testing for internal reliability on self reports, scores on the first section should show the same trend as on the second e.g. an interview on racism would show high scores on both sections of the test if someone was racist
Pilot study
A small scale run through of a piece of research to train researchers and test out the methods
Percentage agreement method
A way of testing your inter-rater reliability. Add up all the similar ratings and work these out as a percentage of the total scores recorded
Standardised procedures
A way of ensuring our method has internal reliability
Test-retest method
A way of checking for external reliability, the same participants should be tested again with a later date and similar results should be found
Internal validity
The extent to which the study measures what it set out to measure
External validity
The extent to which the study is representative and can be generalised outside the study
Ecological validity
The extent to which the study reflects real life situations
Population validity
The extent to which the sample is representative of the wider target population
Face validity
The extent to which the findings look like it’s measuring what it’s supposed to be measuring before statistical analysis
Concurrent validity
The extent to which the study gives the same results as another study which claims to measure the same behaviour
Construct validity
The extent to which a study measures the actual behaviour it set out to measure e.g. does an IQ test really measure intelligence?
Criterion validity
The extent to which the measure predicts the same value of another measure e.g. IQ test predicting success at school
