Validity Flashcards
Validity
The extent to which results are genuine and represents what you would expect to find in real world
Internal validity
Whether the results are due to the manipulation of the IV and not some other factor
- cause + effect
External validity
Factors outside the investigation eg is it generalisable to other settings, populations and eras
Ecological validity
The extent to which findings from a study can be generalised to other settings
Lab study has low EV
Temporal validity
Extent to which results can be generalised to other historical times and eras
Child of its time - Zimbardo, Asch
Ways to assess validity
Face validity
Determines whether a measure appears on the face of it to measure what it’s supposed to
Eyeballing it
Ways to assess validity
Concurrent validity
Extent to which a psychological tool related to an existing similar tool
Results should be similar
Ways to improve validity in experiments
Use a control group
Standardised procedures
Double or single blind techniques
Ways to improve validity in questionnaires
Lie scale - phrase the same question in a different way - limits social desirability
Make them anonymous
Ways to improve validity in observations
