•the lingering taste of an onion represents a lovers kiss. Ambiguous tone. Implying whether lovers are together or not, love is a mark that is hard to remove

•alliteration of sibilance emphasises the kiss

•contrast again- ambiguous tone unclear as “possessive” can be a negative trait in a relationship whereas “faithful” is a positive thing
“for as long as we are”
•at odds with traditional romantic ideas, suggests the relationship might not last forever. Again Duffy os rejecting conventional ideas in an attempt to br truthful
“Its platinum look shrinks to a wedding ring”
•when is all is peeled away and revealed, your left with the traditional symbol of love and marriage
“wedding”
•suggests Duffy doesn’t need/ totally agree with the comparison or traditional symbols
“Lethal”
•changes tone to threatening. Stark, single word statement. Negative view or love? Suggests that too much love and commitment can damage a relationship
“Its scent will cling to your fingers,
cling to your knife.”
- reptition- like the scent of an onion, love will be difficult to remove or shake off
- ends with an implied threat. Just as onions are chopped, the speakers lover has the ability to end their relationship
