Valentine- Carol Ann Duffy (Love) Flashcards
Not a red rose or a satin heart
Two very typical symbols of love, cliche and lack meaning
I give you an onion
Strange gift of love, different to most gifts. Shows the untraditional view she had on love
Moon wrapped in brown paper
Like the onion, plain and unsentimental gift
Blind you with tears
Love will hurt you aswell as make you happy, the onion will also bring you to tears
A wobbling photo of grief
The onion symbolises the way live can cause pain. ‘Blind’ and ‘grief’ are negative unlike most traditional valentines messages
Fierce kiss will stay on your lips
Shows possession just like the scent and taste of an oinion
It’s scent will cling to your fingers, cling to your knife
The repeated word ‘cling’ gives the image of the scent of an onion clinging to your knife. Shows that love can be possessive and suffocating
