Not a red rose or a satin heart.
Poetic voice ~ statement opens the poem by immediately dismissing stereotypical valentine gifts.
Word choice ~ the word ‘Not’ being the first word sets a negative tone and suggests negativity was early onset in the relationship.
Symbolism ~ red is the colour associated with danger, anger and rage, but conversely is associated with love and romance
It will blind you with tears / like a lover
Simile ~ in truth, love is not always perfect and happy. Compares the tears an onion causes, to the pain and grief a relationship causes.
Enjambement ~ suggests the narrator hesitates before admitting that they and their partner are having problems.

Single sentence stanza ~ reflects the desire to remain honest and realistic. Simplifies narrators thought behind the gift.
Alliteration ~ emphasises the determined tone, as she wants to get to the bottom of their problems.
It’s fierce kiss will stay on your lips, / possessive and faithful.
Oxymoron ~ fierce = harsh and anger, kiss = soft and love. Suggests that love has hard times and can become out of control.
Word choice ~ ‘possessive’ gives connotations of controlling, demanding and unexpected.
Word choice ~ ‘faithful’ gives connotations of trustful, loyal and forever.
