Valence Bond theory Flashcards
1
Q
Valence bond theory
A
Electrons reside in quantum-mechanical orbitals. Some being hybridized atomic orbitals. Which is two or more standard orbitals combined. Bigger overlap the lower the energy
2
Q
Interaction energy
A
Distance between two bonding atom: if lowered bond forms
3
Q
Electrons paring
A
In valence bond theory electrons will overlap half filled orbitals or less commonly completely filled orbitals
4
Q
Geometry of molecule
A
Depends on overlapping shells orbitals
5
Q
Hybridization
A
Different from atoms orbitals, form from molecules forming. minimize molecule energy, but requires a lot of energy. Usually occurs on central atom, because they are most likely to bond
6
Q
Calculating hybridization
A
- atomic orbitals = hybrid formed
- combinations of orbitals = shape and energy
- hybridization always forms the lowest energy
