Vaccines- Dr. Johns Flashcards
Characteristics of immunizations?
Highly effective
Cost-effective
Universally recommended
Measurable
Why is Pertussis coming back?
The vaccine loses effectiveness over time…..whoops, better booster that ish.
What is a live attenuated vaccine?
Live microbes weakened by growing them in many generations of animal or tissue cultures.
What is an inactivated vaccine?
whole organism has been killed…..stimulates immune system but doesn’t cause disease
What are inactivated toxin vaccines?
Use inactivated toxins (bacterial) to stimulate immune system
what are subunit vaccines?
Use only part of the bacterium or virus….this is a newer type of vaccine
what are conjugate vaccines?
They link proteins from a second organism to the outer coat of bacteria…..allows baby’s immune system to recognize the bacteria……this is a newer type of vaccine
What are edible vaccines?
Genetically engineered stuff that stimulates an immune response when eaten
who should get the influenza vaccine? What are the contraindications?
Everyone!!! Unless contraindicated
- egg hypersensitivity anaphalaxis
- allergy to thimerosol
- Hx of guillain-barre syndrome
- acute febrile conditions (delay vacc till symptoms gone)
New meningococcal vaccine recommendations?
Routine preadolescent visit 11-12 yrs old
College freshmen living in dorms
Missing spleen
People with immune system disorders
Giving children multiple vaccinations at the same time is bad right? Overloads the immune system?
No, that’s dumb….combo vaccines are effective, reduce visits, and increase compliancy
Valid reasons to not be vaccinated?
- Anaphalaxis reaction
- Prior high fever (really high)
- Immunodeficiency (For some vacc)
- Pregnancy (For some vacc)
- Significant acute illness
Who should get Tdap booster?
Anyone 11-65 yrs old, single booster.
Health care workers
why HIV vaccine hasn’t been made yet?
HIV is hypervariable
no good animal models
clinical trials long and costly
1 for infectious disease deaths????
Tuberculosis
Vaccine not that great
