Vaccine Hesitancy Flashcards
What is vaccine hesitancy
a delay in acceptance or refusal of vaccines, despite the availability of vaccination services
What are the 5Cs that contribute to vaccine hesitancy
Confidence
Constraints
Complacency
Calculation
Collective Responsibility
What is confidence
vaccines, public authorities, providers, and vaccine manufactures are producing safe and effective vaccines
what is constraints
convenience or barrier make getting a vaccine difficult
ex: vaccine deserts- how far you have to drive to get vaccine
transportation
internet access
appointments
time/time off: SE from immune response (although less than actual illness)
what is complacency
vaccines are unnecessary/not urgent bc disease is not severe
what is calculation
need to fully understand vaccine benefits vs risks before getting vaccinated
what is collective responsibility
if others are vaccinated, I dont need to/i want to contribute to the collective good
what is the Moral Foundations Theory and what is better
elephant vs the rider
rider is the good guy
elephant is aggressive and impatient
these 6 moral foundations cause the elephant to react
- care/harm
- fair/cheat
- liberty/oppression
- loyalty/betrayal
- authority/subversion
- sanctity/degradation
When speaking to a patient about vaccines, what must you assume at first?
Vaccine confidence
“we are doing flu shots today, have you had yours?”
what is the Sense-making approach
reflect on what you heard
- “sounds like since…”
-“you’re wondering …”
Asks permission before giving info
- “would it be ok … and you can tell me what you think?”
