  3. The least sentient species that will permit the attainment of research objectives is to be used
  4. The least painful or distressful procedures needed to meet research objectives are to be used, and all reasonable measures to minimize pain and distress should be utilized.
  5. When planning an conducting studies, the principles of the 3rs need to be considered.
  6. Procedure that would be considered painful in human need to be considered to be painful in animals.
  7. The best possible living conditions need to be maintained for animals kept for research, training or testing purposes.
