What is meant by V02 max?

A
  • Maximum amount of oxygen taken in, transported and used in one minute
  • An accurate measure of our aerobic capacity, since it measures how much oxygen is available for aerobic ATP synthesis

What are some factors that contribute towards V02 max?

A
  • Lifestyle
  • Training
  • Age (V02 max decreases with age)
  • Gender
  • Genetics
  • Body composition (higher percentage of body fat decreases V02 max)

What are the advantages to working at a higher V02 max?

A
  • Only applies to aerobic events
  • Means they can exercise at higher intensity whilst still using aerobic energy system
  • Oxygen is therefore used more for energy/ATP production
  • Less anaerobic waste product as OBLA is delayed
