Where is the suction and pressure face of a propeller?
Suction face is forward
Pressure face is aft
What is the significance of PDR-40?
PDR-40 is soft blistering caused by corrosion or rusting in the hulls metal leading to the development of gas bubbles.
*The significance is that the hull itself, not just the paint, is showing damage.
What is the MFR Scale?
The Marine Fouling Rate is a
0-100 scale in increment of 10
0-30 : slime and sea grass
40-90 : hard growth, tube worms, oysters
100 : composite

Houghton PR 1192 Petroleum Base
80-120 normal
140 max
What is the purpose of the masker emitter belts and where are they located?
They mask the acoustic signature of the ships and are located forward of main machinery spaces on the ship.
What are the rules for diving on an active suction?
Considered an emergency repair and is authorized by the CO or both RA and tended vessels.
What are the stave bearings made out of?
Synthetic rubber strips, either metallic backed (class I) or non-metallic backed (class III)

What are the requirements of splashing standby diver as a working diver?
- No-D dive of 60’ or less
- Same job and location
- The work area shall be determined to be free of hazards by red diver
- UWSH or UCT work. Salvage not authorized.
- The standby diver may deploy outside an enclosed or confined space to tend the working divers.

What is the difference between summer and winter bintsuke?
More tallow and rosin
How do you know the ICCP is active?
The reference cell will be emitting small bubbles
What are the types of underwater welding used in Navy Diving?
Shielded Metal Arc
What stave bearing jobs are performed on surface ships?

Explain the paint deterioration scale?
Paint Deterioration Rate (PDR) scale is a rating system of paint deterioration from 10-100 in increments of 10
What is the Rupert Scale and how is it used in comparing roughness?
Used to measure the roughness of the propeller after cleaning and polishing. The diver compares the blade roughness with with his hand until a match is made.
What is the difference between full hull cleaning and interim cleaning?
Full cleaning is the entire hull and interim cleaning refers to the cleaning of propellers, shafts and portions of the hull (running gear)
What is a GFI?
