Utility Software Flashcards
Memorise
What is an interface?
The point at which two systems interact.
What is the purpose of Utility Software?
Utility software is designed to help analyse, configure, optimise, or maintain a computer.
It supports the operating system, which is different to application software that performs tasks that benefit end-users
Like an MOT for a car
Purpose of Disk Defragmentation
To rearrange the files on a hard drive to increase efficiency
What is the role of Disk Defragmentation?
Reorganises files on a hard disk, putting fragments of files and free space back together.
This reduces the movement of the read/write head across the surface of the disk which speeds up file access. - improving overall performance.
Why should SSDs not be defragmented?
Because they have no moving parts so it is unnecessary and reduces the drive’s lifespan.
What is the purpose of file management?
To organize, search, rename, and relocate files stored on the system
What is the role of file management?
Includes creating, deleting, moving, and renaming files and folders
What is the purpose of a device driver?
To provide an interface between the hardware and the operating systems
What is the role of a device driver?
Ensures that the OS and programs can communicate with the hardware without needing to know the hardware’s precise details
What is the purpose of System Cleanup?
To free up space on the system by removing unnecessary files and data
What is the role of a System Cleanup?
System cleanup utilities remove temporary files, system cache, unused applications, and other “junk” that can slow down the system
What is the purpose of security
To protect the computer system from various threats like viruses, malware, and spyware
What is the role of security?
Monitors the system and controls the computer’s activities to protect it from threats
What is file encryption?
Lets users send private files safely by scrambling the contents, and only someone with valid permission can unscramble them.
