Utilities Industry Components Flashcards
what type of mechanical drawing ?
Isometric.
Shows the completed object as it would appear to the eye, with receding edges drawn at 30⁰.
What type of mechanical drawing ?
Oblique.
Shows the completed object as it would appear to the eye, with lengths drawn horizontally and receding edges drawn at 45⁰.
What type of mechanical drawing ?
Orthogonal.
Shows two dimensional views of an object, e.g. from the front, back, sides, top and/or bottom. As many views are shown as is necessary to allow for complete dimensioning of the object.
What type of mechanical drawing ?
Assembly.
Shows an overview of how the components of an item of equipment fit together.
What type of mechanical drawing ?
Detail.
Focuses on a single part of a larger object, to show how that part is manufactured and assembled.

What is marking Media ?
Marking media is a material that is applied to a work surface, generally to improve the visibility of marked lines, and is then washed off prior to completing the project.
Marking blue commonly used in metal work
What is a datum ?
A datum is a line or an edge from which all measurements are made, it is a common reference point for all other measuring and marking out. This way, errors don’t accumulate across the work by measuring from previously measured points.

What are hacksaw blades made from ?
low tungsten steel or high-speed steel.
What is the pitch of a hacksaw blade ?
The pitch indicates the number of teeth per inch (TPI) along the blade
What are the standard pitches of hacksaw blade ?
14, 18, 24, 32 TPI
What do the teeth pitches indicate, i.e teeth size ?
Lower pitch = Course (bigger blades)
High pitch = Fine (smaller blades)
What are course and fine pitch hacksaw blades suitable for ?
Course pitch blades (14-18 TPI) are more suited to soft materials or thicker materials.
Fine pitch blades (24-32 TPI) are more suited to hard materials or thin walled materials.
What are hacksaw blades teeth profile and cut direction ?
How many teeth should remain in contact with material and why (Hacksaw blade)
When cutting thin materials, the blade should be angled to maintain at least three teeth in contact with the work. This aids in accuracy and reduces the chance of the material getting caught between teeth.
What is the typical cutting speed for most jobs when using hacksaw blade ?
50 to 60 strokes per min
What are the basic parts of a file ?
Difference btw flat file and hand file.
Flat file has teeth cut across all faces and edges.
Hand file has one edge that is uncut and smooth.
This allows filing just one surface of an inside corner.
Another difference is that a flat file is tapered, whilst a hand file is not.
What are the four different file cuts.
What are the 3 main grades of file cuts ?
Bastard
Second cut
Smooth
What is “pinning” in filing ?
Pinning occurs when small particles of metal embed themselves around the file teeth.
List the 3 filing techniques .

What is the function of flutes on drill bits ?
Provides exit path for swarf and entry path for lubricants.
What are “Included”, “Relief” and “Chisel” angles required during drill bit sharpening ?
What are these common thread forms ?
What are the four standards of threads ?
- British Standard Whitworth
(BSW) - British Standard Fine (BSF)
- British Association (BA)
- ISO Metric
What does the thread designation “M12 x 1.75” mean ?
Diameter = 12
Pitch = 1.75
What is tapping ?
Tapping refers to cutting a thread into a hole so it can receive a screw
What is this hand tap ?
What is this hand tap ?
What is this hand tap ?
what hole size should be drilled for tapping M5 x 0.8

What is threading ?
Threading refers to the cutting of a thread on the outside of a pipe or round material.

What are the factors to consider when selecting a nut ?
- Style and chamfer
- Thread type and size
- Width and thickness
Name the following nuts.
What is the purpose of a washer ?
The purpose of washers is to either increase the surface area or prevent loosening of a joint
Name the following washers.
What is soft soldering ?
Soft soldering is a method used for joining two metallic components by using a third metal known as ‘solder’.
What is solder commonly made of and at what percentages ?
Tin = 60%
Lead =40%
What are the components of hard solder ?
Copper - Zinc alloy, (silver sometimes)
What are the components of brazing alloys ?
Bronze, copper, zinc, silver, tin and/or phosphorus.
What makes welding different from soldering and brazing ?
Welding differs from soldering and brazing as both the metals being joined and the filler material are melted. The welding rod alloys with each material resulting in a solid fused joint.
What are these tanks ?
Oxy-Acetylene Tanks
How does arc welding work ?
In electric arc welding, one side of the welders output supply is clamped onto the work piece, and the other is connected to an electrode. When operated, an electric arc is produced between the electrode and the work. The heat of the electric arc melts the parent metal and the welding rod. When these cool and harden the result is a solidly fused joint between the two metals.
List 2 examples of arc welding ?
MIG (Metal Inert Gas) welding
TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) welding
How does spot welding work ?
Spot welding is the fusion of two pieces of metal using an electric current. Two copper electrodes on the spot welder push the two pieces of metal together. A high welding current flows out of one electrode, through the metal plates where it encounters resistance at the join, and then into the other electrode.
