How does urine move to the bladder?
From the Kidneys, down the ureters using peristaltic action into the bladder
Where in the urinary tract is it sterile?
Above urethra by voidinig, urine is sterile, bladder mucosa

lack of bladder lack of feeling need to urinate
Who is at a higher risk for UTIs?
Women
Age in women?
20-50
Predisposing factors
renal scarring, urinary retention, foreign body (catheter), urinary reflux, female, stones, neurogenic bladder, dimished peristalsis during pregnancy
Nosocomial
hospital acquired
Cystitis occurs in?
mostly females (short urethra), older men (pre-existing condition, BPH), young girls
Clinical manifestations
Frequency, urgency, smell (foul), hematuria, pyuria, fatigue, anorexia
Hematuria
blood in urine
Pyuria
pus in urine
Pylonephritis
flank pain, tenderness,
how do you get pyelonephritis?
infection within the kidney via the bloodstream or through ascending infection from the bladder
what is Cystitis
when only the bladder is involved and associated with pain and frequency of urination
what is pyelonephritis?
where infection of the kidney fever, chills and flank pain
