UT102 - Development Flashcards
What is the name of the intermediate mesoderm that develops into the kidneys?
nephrotome
what are the 3 different “sets” of kidneys that develop?
1) pronephros
2) mesenephros
3) metanephros
What structures form in the mesonephros before it disintegrates?
The mesonephros is connected to the cloaca via a mesonephric duct. It forms some tubules that sometimes can be found in structures that form adjacent to it like the uterus
Which kidney forms the definitive kidney?
the metanephros
Name the 2 parts of the metanephros that forms the definitive kidney
ureteric bud and metanephric mass.
At how many weeks is it normal to have a lobulated kidney?
25 weeks
At how many weeks in utero are all of the nephrons formed, in which no more nephrons are made?
32-36 weeks
are kidneys required in utero?
no, but urine is formed in utero
where does urine go in utero?
in the amniotic fluid
what is usually the reason why polyhydramnios occurs?
the fetus has defective swallowing; poor reprocessing of amniotic fluid
what is a consequence to oligohydramnios
lung hypoplasia
what structure separates the urinary tract from the GI tract?
urorectal septum
what happens to the leftover mesonephric duct?
forms parts in the male, but not in females.
What is the significant of Accessory Renal Artery?
this is an end artery from the abdominal aorta to the kidney. If it is cut, part of the kidney will die. This is due to remnant development in utero when the kidneys are rising and new arteries are formed between the abdominal aorta and kidney
What is autosomal recessive polycystic kidney disease?
It is a congenital disorder that is very rare that occurs bilaterally. Many cysts develop in the kidney due to oligohydramnios in utero. Many cysts develop but very few glomeruli. The kidneys are usually non-functional
What is multi cystic dysplastic kidney disease?
a congenital disorder in which the kidney forms large cysts but is still functional. usually unilateral. Slowly progressing through adulthood
What is a horseshoe kidney ?
A kidney that is functional but both of the kidneys are fused together. Found lower in the abdomen
