Q

What are the steps of using a microscope?

A
  1. Always carry it by the handle and the base.
  2. Begin by turning to the lowest magnification objective lens.
  3. Place your specimen slide on the stage and clip in place.
  4. Turn on the light.
5.Turn the coarse focus wheel until you see an image.
  5. If you need a clearer image carefully turn the fine focus wheel
  6. If you loose focus go back and start again with the large focus wheel.

13
Q

Why is it important to stain cells?

A

Most cells and tissues are see through so you need to stain parts of them with special dyes to make them easier to see under the microscope

Q

How do you look at plant cells under a microscope?

A
  1. Cut a small piece of onion
  2. Use forceps to peel off the very thin inner layer
  3. Put the piece of onion skin flat on the slide
  4. Put a few drops of iodine solution onto the onion
  5. Gently lower the cover slip onto the slide using a mounting needle

17
Q

Where is the microscope slide placed?

A

On the stage

18
Q

How do you alter the magnification on a microscope?

A

By changing the objective lens

19
Q

When preparing a microscope slide, why do you place the cover slip at a 45 degree angle?

A

To prevent air bubbles

20
Q

(true/ false) You alter the coarse lens before you alter the fine lens?

A

True

21
Q

Which objective lens magnification should you start off with?

A

The lowest magnification first
