What are the steps of using a microscope?
- Always carry it by the handle and the base.
- Begin by turning to the lowest magnification objective lens.
- Place your specimen slide on the stage and clip in place.
- Turn on the light.
5.Turn the coarse focus wheel until you see an image. - If you need a clearer image carefully turn the fine focus wheel
- If you loose focus go back and start again with the large focus wheel.
How do you work out the total magnification?
Magnification of eye piece lens * Magnification of objective lens
How do you work out the magnification of eye piece lens?
Total magnification/ Magnification of objective lense
How do you work out the magnification of the objective lense?
Total magnification/ Magnification of eye piece lense
(Meaning) Staining cells?
Staining cells is when you dye a cell a different colour before putting it under the microscope
Why is it important to stain cells?
Most cells and tissues are see through so you need to stain parts of them with special dyes to make them easier to see under the microscope
How do you look at plant cells under a microscope?
- Cut a small piece of onion
- Use forceps to peel off the very thin inner layer
- Put the piece of onion skin flat on the slide
- Put a few drops of iodine solution onto the onion
- Gently lower the cover slip onto the slide using a mounting needle
(2 reasons) Why do we use coverslips?
-To prevent the specimen from drying
-To flatten the specimen
