Uses of Crude Oil Flashcards
what conditions are needed to crack fractions
Heat and a catalyst
how can we distinguish between alkenes and alkanes
bromine turns from brown/orange to colourless in the presence of an alkene
why does the bromine test only work in alkenes
because alkenes have a carbon carbon double bond which means it’s unsaturated
why are alkenes made during cracking useful
they can be made into polymers
what is a biofuel
a fuel derived from plants
why are biofuels often described as carbon neutral
the carbon released during burning=the carbon taken in during growth
what is an advantage of using hydrogen as fuel
when it is burnt only water is produced not CO2
what is a disadvantage of using hydrogen as a fuel
it is explosive
2 main methods of creating ethanol
- hydration of ethene with steam with a catalyst
- anaerobic Fermentation of sugar with yeast
advantages and disadvantages of the two methods of making ethanol
- ethene is non renewable whereas sugar is
- fermentation is slower and has an impure product
- hydration is quicker, has a purer product and is a continuous process
what is cracking
when some of the larger alkane fractions are broken down into more valuable smaller ones
