Uses and dangers of EM Waves Flashcards
explain the use of radio waves
communication between tv, radio signals this is because they can travel long wavelengths without losing quality of sound
explain the use of microwaves
used for cooking, as microwaves are absorbed by and heat fat/water in foods.
explain the use of infrared radiation
infrared cameras, tv remotes, thermal imaging, electrical heaters, ovens and grills
explain the uses of visible light
allows us to use phones, ipad (sources of technology)
explain the uses of ultraviolet radiation
sterilisation , sun tanning, fluorescent security
explain the uses of X-rays
Medical imaging and treatment, because they are very high energy and can easily penetrate body tissues.
explain the uses of gamma rays
used in medical treatments, (radiotherapy for treating) cancer
to sterilise medical equipment and food
used in hospitals as they have the highest energy of all the em waves therefore can be used to destroy tumours in radiotherapy.
dangers of ultraviolet waves:
can cause the skin to age prematurely
can damage skin cells
can increase the risk of developing skin cancer
dangers of x-rays and gamma rays:
can cause mutations in genes
can lead to increased risk of developing various cancers
dangers of infrared radiation:
can cause burns to skin/tissue
what are the effects of body cells absorbing radiation?
large amounts can damage cells. smaller amounts cause mutation, causing cells to divide rapidly, which can lead to cancer.
which em waves are said to be the most dangerous
gamma and x-rays as they have the most energy
