User Interface Design Flashcards
What is a complementary color scheme?
A complementary color scheme involves two colors that sit opposite each other on the color wheel. The contrast between these colors can be used to create tension in a design.
What is a triadic color scheme?
A triadic color scheme involves 3 colors on separate ends of the color spectrum. It is ideal for playful and vibrant designs, like children’s toys or fun websites.
What is an analogous color scheme?
An analogous color scheme involves a selection of colors that sit next to each other on the color wheel. It can lack contrast but can feel cohesive.
What is a monochromatic color scheme?
A monochromatic color scheme uses a single color by adjusting its shades, tints, and tones. It is excellent for sleek, modern designs like portfolios or corporate branding.
Explain the graphic design principle of hierarchy.
Hierarchy in graphic design means that larger elements on web pages appear more important. This can be used to organize text content with headings that appear larger than body text.
Explain the graphic design principle of proximity.
Proximity is where related design elements and information are placed together in a design. For example, image captions can be placed directly underneath the images they describe.
Explain the graphic design principle of emphasis.
Emphasis involves making content stand out using size or color to draw the user’s eye to important parts of a web page. For example, brightly colored call-to-action buttons set against a white background will be more visible.
Explain the use of white space in design.
White space is the intentional use of empty areas in a design to enhance readability, focus attention on key elements, establish visual hierarchy, and create a clean, balanced aesthetic.
What is kerning?
Kerning is the typography property that refers to the space between individual letters.
What is leading?
Leading is the typography property that refers to the space between lines of text.
What is tracking?
Tracking is the degree of space between all letters and words in a paragraph.
Describe serif fonts.
Serif fonts have small decorations at the ends of their strokes. The small strokes or ‘serifs’ at the end of letters guide the reader’s eye along the text, making long passages easier to read in print. Serif fonts appear more formal and old-fashioned.
Describe sans-serif fonts.
Sans-serif fonts do not have small decorations at the ends of their strokes. They are highly legible on digital devices and at smaller sizes, and have a modern and minimal aesthetic.
Describe monospace fonts.
Each glyph in a monospace font has the same width and tend to be associated with technical documentation. Monospace fonts appear utilitarian with each letter having a uniform width.
How can lines be used in website design?
Lines can be used to divide parts of a website and direct the eye. They can be used to separate the header and body of a blog post to make them more distinct from each other. They can also be used to underline hyperlinks to indicate that they can be interacted with.
How can shapes be used in website design?
Shapes can be used to contain content, for example, circles, rectangles, and blobs. Content can be visually separated into different categories this way when various shapes are used or are combined with color. They can define boundaries around content to group them together and establish a stronger relationship between them.
