Use of Force Policy

Guiding Principal
Only that force reasonably necessary under the circumstances may be used, excessive force may never be used, force shall not be used where assigned duties can be discharged without it. However, nothing in the Use of Force policy can misconstrued that members have t0 meet force with equal or lesser force.
Three types of self defense.
Individual

National

Officer Presence Verbal Commands Control Techniques Aggressive Response Techniques Intermediate Weapons Deadly Force
Officer Presence
Appearance, demeanor, verbal and non-verbal communication that creates an atmosphere of compliance.
EX: Uniform, CG Stripe, etc
Drawing PDW, Baton, OC, etc
Chambering a round in Shotgun to compel compliance.
Verbal Commands
Commands in the form of task direction with consequences aimed at subject.
Control Techniques
Techniques or actions with a low probability of causing connective tissue damage, lacerations of the skin, or broken bones.
Include the proper use of pain compliance and strength techniques, and normal application of handcuffs.
Aggressive Response Techniques.
Techniques or actions likely to result in connective tissue damage, lacerations of the skin, broken bones, or irritation of the eyes, nose, mucus membrane. Includes proper use of punches, kicks, stuns, and oleoresin capsicum.
Def of Intermediate weapons.
Techniques or actions likely to result in connective tissue damage, lacerations of the skin, or broken bones. Include use of expandable baton, or less than lethal munitions.
Def of deadly force.
Any force likely to result in death, or serious physical injury.
Def of serious physical injury.
Actual physical injury to the body that results in unconsciousness, protracted and obvious disfigurement, or protracted loss or impairment of the function of a bodily member, organ, or mental faculty.
