A

If animals are for human use then awuinas’ nml justifies using animals as food and it justifies intensive farming procedures.

The issue of whether animals have a right to life is not relevant to aquinas’ system since any potential rights for animals are subsumed underbrights of humans.

Given aristotles hierarchy of souls, aristotle would have had no ethical problem with eating meat, since he considered that animals existed for human sake.

However in modern context its not clear how aristotle would have reacted to the methods of intensive farming for example the harsh precedures taking place for intensive farming of chickens.

What virtues could aristotle refer to in support of eating factory farmed food?

Compassion must apply to all animals; humans and non humans. Factory farming of animals is not even remotely compassionate.

We might reply that virtues must be directed towards persons and not towards animals but again if aristotle could see the conditions of factory farming in which animals have to live, he could point that such conditions could lead a person to develop a cirtuous character.
