P: One way that people can participate in the USA is voting for candidates in an election.
E: This is when citizens of the USA choose a candidate that best represent their political views on issues such as gun control and abortion and votes for that candidate in federal and state elections.
E: For example, many people voted for Joe Biden to become president of the USA in November 2020

P: A second way that USA citizens can participate is by joining protests.
E: This is when US citizens can express how they feel about matters that are important to them by using methods such as marching and displaying banners
E: For example, recent protests include Black Lives Matter protests and many women campaigning against the supreme courts overturning of Roe vs Wade in 2022.

P: One reason why women/ethnic minorities may be under represented is because of the cost of US elections.
E: Candidates in US elections must raise huge sums of money to fight elections. Women and ethnic minorities are more likely to live in poverty, less likely to stand for election so it makes it harder to participate.

P: One reason why ethnic minorities may be under represented is because of racism. It is argued that ethnic minorities face discriminate and prejudice from white voters who are reluctant to vote for them.
E: During the 202 election the name of vice president Kamala Harris was often made openly fun of by fellow senators.

P: One reason why women/ethnic minorities may be under represented is because of the incumbency effect.
E: This is raw idea that once you are elected its easier to stay in office as you get all the tax payer paid benefits to help you such as paying for letters to all voters on what you have done in office. This makes it easier for men/whites to keep power.
E: 77% of congress are white and so they have an advantage to staying in power.

P: One reason why women may be under represented may be because of sexism.
E: Many women are reluctant to put themselves forward as candidates because they often face sexism in the media. The media often focuses on their looks and fashion rather than ideas and experiences.

P: One cause of health inequality in the USA is the high cost of health insurance.
E: This is because, for many Americans in poverty the cost of health insurance is too high so they may be unable to afford it. This is especially true for African Americans and Hispanics because they are more likely to be in poverty and have lower levels of health insurance compared to white Americans.
E : An example of this is that 33% of Hispanics and 22% of African Americans do not have insurance compared to around 14% of white Americans.

P: A second cause of health inequality in the USA is a persons lifestyle choices.
E: This is because people who are in poverty may struggle to afford a healthy diet, and their lifestyle include excess consumption of fast food high in calories and fat. This may result in a chronic health condition such diabetes which effects Hispanics and African Americans.
E: An example of this is that 15% of African Americans suffer with diabetes compares to 87% of whites.

E: This is because, African Americans and Hispanics are more likely to be in poverty than white Americans and therefore less likely to be able to afford health insurance and medical bills leading to them living unhealthier lives often with untreated illnesses.
E: An example of this is nationally African Americans live for an average of 7 years less than white Americans.

E: This is because African Americans and Hispanics are more likely to live in poverty which contributes to poor lifestyle choices such as smoking and a poor diet. This then increases their likelihood oof suffering from chronic conditions such as diabetes.
E: An example of this is that 15% of American Americans suffer with diabetes compared to 87% of whites.
