USA in the 1930's Flashcards
AAA
(Agricultural Adjustment Administration):
FCA
(farm credit admin)
AAA
paid farmers to take land out of production and raise less livestock.
WPA
(work progress administration)
FCA
: helped farmers work out deals with banks to refinance loans with them so that farmers don’t lose their farms
PWA
(Public Works Administration)
WPA
: Gov created public works (bridges, roads, hospitals, schools). Employed M’s of people, both skilled and unskilled, who were “tickled” to have the jobs.
CCC
(Civilian Conservation Corps)
PWA
: same as WPA but on a larger scale.
TVA
(Tennessee Valley Authority)
CCC
: Relief program to combat unemployment by moving young men to the countryside. They did various things such as plant trees in dustball states. the army helped organize jobs for young men to raise their spirits bc if not, they would end up wondering, concentrated in streets, drinking, ending up in extremist groups. Also helped preserve the environment
SSA
(Social Security Act):
TVA
: developed the economy in the Tennessee Valley region by providing electricity so that they could now listen to radio, boost industry and attract people to live there.
FERA
Federal Emergency Relief Act
SSA
designed to combat the widespread poverty among senior citizens and disabled. Gov provided income to retired wage earners, funded by wage earners and their employers. Since then, it has expanded to the unemployed and the definition of disabled people has changed bc Reps try to limit social security whereas Dems try to expand it. (Entitlement program).
NRA
National Recovery Administration
FERA
For the most desperate, the Federal Emergency Relief Act (was given 500M by gov) paid to feed and shelter them. Among the most destitute were artists so the FERA employed them to do murals, mosaics.
NRA
dealt with working conditions. Child labor, max 8hrs/day, min wage, more compulsory rules and enterprises had pressure to do it (if they did, got official sticker, but if they didn’t, boycotted)
Wagner Act
(1935): made unions legal, made the NLRB (to complain to) and legalised collective bargaining in order to elect a representative to negotiate new contracts.
NLRB
National Labor Relations Board
