Treaty of Greenville 1794
IN 1783 Britain signed over 230 million acres of land to the USA by this was Native American land
US defeated the Native Americans at the battle of Fallen Timbers 1794
Treaty handed over the Northwest and Southwest Territories to the US government
Forced Native Americans to move further West
By the 1830s the land became mostly US states
President Jefferson’s settlement
Jefferson tried to encourage settler to move West into Northwest and Southwest territories
He auctioned off the land in 640 acre plots
Land speculators would buy this land and sell for profit
Squatters who could not afford to buy land moved anyways and began living in this land illegally
Louisiana Purchase 1803
The French were looking to sell the colony of Louisiana as they needed money to fight off the British
President Jefferson bought it for $15 million- a steal
Sent explorers such as Lewis and Clark to explore this area and try to establish trade routes to the West.
Explorers allowed others to follow and establish trading furs. Encouraged further expansion

George Washington saw naive Americans as biologically equal but their society as inferior

White army led by Jackson defeated the creeks and purchased their land off them

Problems with settlement for mormons
Bringham Young believed nobody would have the right to own land, so the Church decided depending on people’s needs
Biggest problem was growing food
Dug irrigation channels to make sure they had access to water

The US government seized the area around Salt Lake from the Mexicans, mormons brought back to USA
Young planned other mormon towns and settlements, mormons spread rapidly over the territory
Worried many people in the East due to fear of Mormon religion spreading
US government denied request to make Utah a state

Utah was not free to make it’s own laws on ownership or marriage
The government sent troops to Utah to bring it into line with US laws
John D.Lee massacred settlers they believed to be US spies, Lee blamed Native Americans but was proven to be mormons
Young stepped down as govener of Utah
Utah was made to follow the laws of the USA
