Literally means ‘friends of the court’. An amicus curiae brief is a brief submitted by a party with a vested interest in the case to try and advance their view on a case decision.

a policy that allows minority groups to intentionally advantaged in order to begin to correct historic disadvantages.
e.g. slavery meant that historically black people were more disadvantaged. Some places have a quota of black people they need to higher in order to bridge the gap of inequality.
