What was Operation rolling thunder?
“blanket bombing” of North Vietnam, where they just attack everywhere.
What types of planes were involved?
B-52’s to cause destruction
What was “hearts and minds”?
The south vietnamese trying to improve conditions for example building new roads and schools to show that the US were on their side therefore towns stayed loyal
What was “search and destroy”?
Helicopters took troops to make surprise attacks on the villagers so the vietcong couldn’t escape and if there was any evidence of vietcong the whole village would be destroyed.
What was “agent orange and napalm”
Agent orange was used to destroy leaves and undergrowth so there was no where for the vietcong to hide. Napalm caused serious burns to the skin and could spread for miles too.

March 1968

Lt Calley ordered that the village was to be destroyed

Was the My Lai massacre important?
yes because the American public learnt of the killings in 1969 & were shocked and may people thought this made America just as bad as the enemy.
