Helping minorities that used to suffer by providing them with extra benefits
Culture Wars
Times in the 60s and 70s where there was conflict over people discovering new culture (music, sex, hair, etc)
Deficit
When a government spends more money than it can get back
Energy Crisis
A time in the 1970s where OPEC didn’t let as much oil into the US so people had problems with things like gas for cars. Sparked a push for energy independence
Evangelicalism
A new push in Christianity to spread the word a lot, and a few other things like a more significant conversion to God
Fundamentalism
Strict literal belief in scripture
Neoconservatism
Political views that believe in things like small government and capitalism and personal responsibility
Moral Majority
Conservative Christian group that believed in spreading Christian laws and morals
Reaganomics
Believed in the largest economic growth. Domestic budget cutting and certain tax cuts, for example. Reduced size of federal govt
Ronald Reagan
Pushed for conomic conservatism. He cut out many welfare and public works programs and tried to avoid conflict with the Strategic Defense Initiative program (a missile space receptor that was never actually built). He had meetings with Gorbachev were the first steps to ending the Cold War

First woman in Supreme Court. Conservative. During Reagan’s time
Three Mile Island
Partial meltdown of nuclear factory in the US, could have been super bad. Damaged trust for nuclear power and Carter
Yuppies
The original flexers of the US with cool watches and cars
Afghanistan 1979-1988
Nine year proxy war with the Soviets. The Soviet Union was against the Afghan Mujahideen guerrilla warfare. The Mujahideen was provided aid from countries, especially the US
Contras
Rebel groups with US support that fought the Sandinista in Nicaragua
Glasnost
A policy Gorbachev called for to relax tensions and closedness with the West and relax Soviet citizenry
Grenada
Heavy fire from Reagan was put upon here to stop a possible Marxist rise up. Attempt to assert US dominance in the Caribbean
Iran - Contra Affair
US sold missiles to Iran (to help Lebanese hostages) to get money in return for the anti-communist forces in Nicaragua. Big scandal for Reagan
Mikhail Gorbachev
1985-1991 leader of Soviet Union. Improved relations with West but let the collapse of Eastern Europe communism happen
Mujahideen
A name for groups in Afghanistan who collectively fought against Soviet occupation
Perestroika
A policy Gorbachev agreed with and pursued. Restructured Soviet economic and governmental ways
Kosovo
A part of Yugoslavia (still very contested to this day) that had its own government. Then, Milosevic, who was president of Serbia/Yugoslavia attempted to ethnically cleanse the Albanians of the region. Then NATO came in (in 1999) and used military strikes to eventually end the crisis.
