What are the Articles of Confederation?
Sucked
-Couldn’t tax
-Couldn’t have a military
-the written document that established the functions of the national government of the United States after it declared independence from Great Britain
What was the Northwest Territory?
Good thing:
-Outlawed slavery in the NW
-Outlined how to be a state
-Set up public education
What was Shay’s Rebellion?
A farmer Daniel Shay’s took money from the bank for farming equipment and didn’t want to pay it back so they started to kill the bankers.
What was the Philadelphia Convention?
-They originally went to fix the problems of the Articles of Confederation
-1787
-Their intention was not to write the Constitution but that is what ended up happening
Who was James Madison?
-Known as the Father of the Constitution
-His plan was the Virginia Plan
What was the Virginia Plan?
-Virginia wanted a states representation to be based off of population
-Executive, Judicial, (Bicameral) Legislative
Legislative, Executive, and Judicial branches did what?
Legislative- Made the laws
Executive-Enforced the laws
Judicial-Interprets laws
What is a Bicameral Legislature?
House of Representatives and the Senate
What was the New Jersey plan?
Representation would be equal
What is the Great Compromise?
House of Representatives would be based on population (Virginia Plan)
Senate would be equal (New Jersey Plan)
What is a Census?
Every 10 years the population of each state is recounted to see if the HOR amount needs to increase or decrease.
What is the 3/5th Compromise?
When only 3 out of 5 slaves would be considered in the population of a state (The south didn’t like it)
What were the Federalist Papers?
Persuasive writings written and published to urge New Yorkers to ratify the proposed United States Constitution
What is the Bill of Rights?
-The first 10 Amendments
-Limiting the power of the National Government
What is the Supreme Law of the Land?
Nobody is over the Constitution
What is a Federalist?
They believe in a strong central government
What is an Anti Federalist?
Wanted a weak central government

Congress had no authority to enforce its requests to the states for money or troops.
