What is the supreme law of the land?

A

The US Constitution. The government cannot pass a law that goes against the Constitution. The SCOTUS can say that a state or federal law is unlawful if it is unconstitutional and goes against the Constitution.

What does the Constitution do?

A
  1. Sets up government.
  2. Defines government.
  3. Protects the basic rights of American citizens.
    The national government is divided into 3 branches: legislative, executive, and judicial. The Constitution also divides federal and state power. The Constitution also protects the freedoms of American citizens in the Bill of Rights.

What is an amendment?

A

  2. An addition to the Constitution.
    Amendments are the ONLY way change the constitution. An amendment must be approved by 3/4 of the legislatures or state ratifying conventions.

The Bill of Rights was approved in 1791. It pledges personal rights and freedoms. Limits government’s power. Explains that powers not delegated to Congress should be reserved for the states or the people.

4. A president can be reelected once totaling 8 years of service as president. A president can be voted to serve 1 term or 2 consecutive terms or 2 non-consecutive terms. A US president can serve no more than 8 years total.

The Vice President. The VP is the first in line to succeed the president.

The President. This falls under Article II, Section 2, Clause I of the US Constitution.

Who signs bills into law?
The President. A bill must pass the House of Representatives and the Senate by a majority vote. At that point it is sent to the President to sign into law or veto.
