Group A b-haemolytic strep

What are symptoms of pharyngitis?
Sore throat
Fever
If viral then cough and nasal congestion
If bacterial then exudate present
What should be ruled out in patients presenting with pharyngitis?
Rheumatic fever (especially in children if bacterial)
What is rheumatic fever?
Systemic inflammatory disease, typically 2-4 weeks post group A strep infection
What is sinusitis?
Inflamed mucosa of nasal cavity and nasal sinuses
Is sinusitis mainly bacterial or viral?
Viral
How long is viral sinusitis typically?
Less than 10 days
How long is bacterial sinusitis typically?
More than 10 days
What bacteria cause sinusitis?
S. pneumoniae
H influenzae
What do you treat sinusitis with if bacterial infection?
Amoxicillin
