What forms the upper urinary tract?
The kidneys and ureters
What forms the lower urinary tract?
The bladder and urethra
What forms the male genital tract?
The penis, scrotum, testes and prostate
What makes up the layers of the walls of the renal pelvis, ureter, bladder and urethra?
- Urothelium (transitional epithelium)
- lamina propria
- Muscularis propria (called the detrusor in the bladder)
- Adventitia (called the perivesical fat in the bladder).
What are the different zones of the prostate gland?
- Transitional
- Central
- Peripheral
What are the prostatic acini and what do they secrete?
Glandular structures. They secrete prostatic juice which drains into the prostatic urethra via the duct system
What do stromal cells in the prostate contain and what are their function?
5 a-reductase which converts testosterone into its more potent derivative dihydrotestosterone, thereby maintaining suitable levels of androgens in the prostate.
