Urinary catheterization lab Flashcards
What are the two purposes of a catheter?
Draining urine from bladder
Collecting urine for measurement (if they cannot make it to a toilet in time)
(allows you to bypass)
Who is it harder to do a catheter in?
Males, longer urethra
Why do you order a cath?
Impediment of urine flow
Diagnostic and evaluation
Inability to make it to the toilet
severe refractory incontinence
Intravesical therapy (like chemotherapy into bladder instead of veins)
What are CI to catheter?
Absolute: Uretheral injury (can get into pelvic floor)
Relative: urethral stricture (severe enlarged prostate), recent GU surgery, artificial urinary sphincter (delicate and can be damaged)
What are some complications of a urinary catheter?
Depends on the type of catheter, but in general:
Infections d/t bypassing immune system
Mechanical (rare), balloon can rupture and be hard to geet out
Bladder damage: fistula, kidney stones (gives crystal a place to connect)
Urethral damage: acute or chronic (make a stricture)
What is important to keep in mind for responsible catheter use?
Only when abs necessary
Always NEED STERILE TECHNIQUE (never event, NEVER SHOULD GET A UTI FROM THIS)
Should always use a non-indwelling catheter
Use for the shortest time as possible
What are external catheters?
Meant to collect urine
Condom catheters for instance
Not for treatment approach (can become detached easily)
Male: put over the penal shaft and is no
What is the female external catheter?
PureWick
-urine collection system
What is the suprapubic urinary catheter?
Most invasive
Bypasses urethra (less bacteriuria)
Hole through the abdominal wall
balloon inflated
this is how cats get their UTIs check
What is a urtheral catheter?
The MC catheter
straight cath (easiest) - put into the bladder and then pulled as soon as it is voided (which is why it is common for self-catheterization)
Indwelling (foley): chronic incontinence, worst UTI outcomes. Similar to straight cath, but is duel lumen (two ports for urine collection and deflate balloon)
What are the preliminary step for putting on indwelling catheter?
Use non-sterile gloves, explain procedure, ensure consent, treatment areas is clear, open kit for contents
