gonococcal urethritis is also known as?
gonorrhea
C. trachomatis causes what infection?
chlamydia.
Case: a man with dysuria, thick pus, he has been putting a sock on it to prevent it from staining his pants. Diagnosis?
probably gonococcal (gonarrhea)
20% of gonorrhea pt’s are co-infected for Chlamydia. Always treat for both!!
Case: a man with dysuria, he has a clear discharge coming out of his penis. It only comes out in the morning. Diagnosis?
likely to be non-gonococcal urethritis (chlamydia)
Gram stain of pus ffrom penis: gram negative diplococci. Diagnosis?
neisseria gonorrheae
How many WBCs per high power field diagnose urethritis?
> 2 WBC/ high power field.
Case: someone with high risk sexual behavior - panel of testing to do?
Test for:
gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, and HIV
ceftriaxone and azithromycin, which antibiotic treats which type of urethritis?
ceftriaxone = gonococcal (N. gonorrhea)
azithromycin or doxycycline = non-gonococcal (chlamydia)
