Common causative agents of urethritis?
Neisseria gonorrhoea, chlamydia trachomatis
Rare: yeast, HSV, adenovirus
Trauma: intermittent catheterisation, etc
How does urethritis typically present?
Between ages 15/24, low socio-economic class, prior or current STD.
Urethreal discharge (from clear to purulent), itching or irritation between voids.
Dysuria.
Sensation of heavyness in male genitals.
Investigations for urethritis?
Gram stain of urethral discharge.
NAAT test
Culture discharge
Management for gonorrhoea induced urethritis?
Ceftriaxone stat + doxycycline 7 days
Or cefixime, or gentamicin + azithromycin stat
Management of urethritis not suggestive of gonorrhoea?
Doxycyclin 7/7 or azithromycin 7/4
